Keeping a poultry house cool isn't just about comfort—it’s about survival and productivity. When temperatures climb, birds stop eating and start stressing, which is where evaporative cooling pads become the MVP of the farm.
Here is a breakdown of how they work, the types available, and how to keep them running efficiently.
How They Work: The Science of "Chill"
Cooling pads operate on the principle of evaporative cooling. As hot outside air is pulled through a wet cellulose pad by high-powered fans, water evaporates into the air. This process consumes heat energy, significantly dropping the air temperature.
Note: This system works best in environments with low to moderate humidity. If the air is already saturated with water (high humidity), evaporation slows down, and the cooling effect drops.Pro-Tips for Peak Performance
1. Water Quality is King
Hard water leads to calcium buildup (scaling), which blocks airflow and turns your pads into "bricks."
The Fix: Use a water softener or scale inhibitor if your water is mineral-heavy.
pH Balance: Aim for a pH between 6.0 and 8.0 to prevent the resin from breaking down.
2. Manage Algae Growth
Algae loves wet pads and sunlight. Once it takes hold, it restricts airflow and increases the load on your fans.
The Fix: Use an approved algaecide and ensure the pads dry out completely once every 24 hours (usually at night) to kill off spores.
3. Airflow Velocity
For the system to work, air must move through the pad at the right speed.
Standard Rule: Most 6-inch (15cm) pads are designed for an air velocity of about 350–400 feet per minute. If the air moves too fast, it can pull water droplets into the house (bad for litter); too slow, and you won't get enough cooling.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Dry Spots: If parts of the pad are dry, hot air will "leak" through those spots because air follows the path of least resistance. Ensure your distribution pipe is clear.
Clogged Gutters: Feathers and dust often clog the return gutters. Clean these weekly to prevent the pump from running dry.
Ignoring the Fans: A cooling pad is only as good as the fans pulling air through it. If your fan belts are loose, the pads won't perform.
